Vanishing Island in Samal

Every 12th of June, Filipinos are celebrating their independence day. Since it was holiday, our vocation club (FACEVo.C) decided to have our rest and recreation day in vanishing island located in Samal, Davao City.

The cottage that we rented cost 1500 php for day tour and 3500 php for night tour. The place was just enough for a big group like us. We rented the boat for the entire day which cost us 5000 php. Since the boat was ours whole day, it didn't leave us until we went home. We were supposed to go to the bat cave but the boatmen said that it's not possible because it was low tide at that time.

We arrived at 9 in the morning and it was high tide. We immediately dipped into the clean and refreshing water since the care taker of the place said that it will be low tide in the afternoon.

As part of our activity of course we had prepared some games for the whole group. We also have two members of the group who will celebrate their birthday for this month. Both Sr. Ma. Ann and Rub celebrates their birthday on June 14.

Happy Birthday Sr Ann and Ruby!

Right beside the cottage that we rented was another cottage, it is only a few steps. Nobody owns this cottage, so tourist can just stop by and stay without paying any fee. Right after swimming, we went to another cottage for cam-whoring session.

One of the few things that we enjoyed in this place aside from the crystal clear water is the mangroves. There are plenty of mangroves that you will surely love to see. Just don't forget to apply sunblock since the island doesn't have enough shade to hide from the scorching sun.

Puerto Prinsesa - City Tour

For this Summer my sisters and I together with my sister's boyfriend headed to the best island destination in Southeast Asia in 2007 according to National Geographic traveler. Since it is the largest province in the country after Davao City in terms of total area of jurisdiction, long hours of traveling should be expected. But we've gone too far just to reach this land so we are definitely ready for an adventure.

Davao International Airport

We arrived in Palawan 10 minutes before 10 o'clock. Thank God that the weather is so sunny, the weather is actually 32 degrees Celsius. Sun dance really works!!!

45 minutes travelling time (dvo- pps)

can't wait to go down ^__^

Upon arrival, we went out to look for some tricycle for our city tour. A tricycle driver approached us and offer 600 php for city tour that will last for four hours. We grab it since that is the regulated price based on the blog. Kuya Jun our driver advised us to booked for a shuttle van before we will start our tour. Our plan is really to ride a bus going to El Nido after the tour but he insisted that it is more convenient to ride a van since there are rough road going to El Nido plus we will arrived late. Hearing those advises we decided to booked a van outside the airport. The name of the company is Eulen Joy Express, with so much haggle we convinced them with a rate of 1200 php per pax round trip shuttle van to El Nido.

Hello Puerto Prinsesa!

The first destination was the Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center formerly known as Crocodile Farm and Nature Park. It is the farthest destination was included in the city tour,we traveled 30 minutes to get here.

at the entrance

Entrance fee cost 50 php each pax, there was a small tour around the center together with the tour guide. It is not only home for endangered Philippine crocodile but along with other animals such as ostriches, endemic bear cat and many more.

At the end of the tour guest can take pictures with the baby crocodile for a fee of 50 php per group. You can also purchased their pictures for 200 php each or 300 php for two pictures. They also sell crocodile's meat for a minumum price per kilo.

We headed to Mitra's Ranch afterwards. It is a place with beautiful view deck with an overlooking spot for sea, mountains, and the forest. This place was actually owned by the former senator Ramon Mitra but even though it is a private owned ranch it is open to public for free. There are several activities here, it includes horse ridding and zip line. Honda Bay can be spotted at the ranch.

Lovers in Baker's Hill

Baker's Hill is the next destination, the place is simply a bakery on the hill. It is not only a place for bread but it is a good destination for taking pictures.

Marilyn Monroe

There are plenty of things you can see inside the compound such as different Disney character, cute lodge, animals, flowers and even souvenir shops.

Baker's Hill

People go here for their famous hopia for 45 php per box. They also sell different kinds of pastries with reasonable price yet taste so delicious. Every item we got taste super delicious. We bought some for pasalubong since the driver said that you find there hopia in the downtown, so we grabbed some for our love ones considering it had at least 5 days before it expires.

Mini cake

For lunch our driver suggested us to eat in "Dampa sa Mansion Seafood", located near Mitra's Ranch. Beside the restaurant is a small market selling fresh seafoods and you can have it cook in the restaurant for about 100-200 php price range depending on how it will be cooked.

grill squid and garlic butter shrimp

After meal we proceeded downtown for the continuation of the city tour. Next stop was Baywalk, it is an area for locals to stroll, biking, walking and jogging. At night there are food stalls and some recreational activity. Since it was too hot when we got there, we just tour around without getting outside the tricycle so that's why we don't have any pictures taken in that place.

Next location was the Plaza Cuartel, it is near the wharf area of Puerto Prinsesa. This spot is were you can learn Palawan's History during World War II. As tourist visit this place there are tourist guide that will give brief history of Palawan. No fees were collected here.

The plaza has a bronze marker that contains the name of eleven prisoners of war (POW) who managed to survive the horrible massacre that happened in this place. The bronze marker is placed above the area where main underground bunkers existed. (Palawanboard)

Last part of the city tour was a visit to the city's main cathedral. Immaculate Conception Church is situated in the proper town of Puerto Prinsesa near Plaza Cuartel, it existed for more than a century.

Kuya Jun drop us where we booked a trip to El Nido. The tour ended 3:00 pm and we waited for 30 minutes for some passengers before heading to El Nido.

exhausted...

After 7 hours on the road we finally reached El Nido, we stop twice first is for dinner and second for restroom break. From the terminal we rode a tricycle to our Inn which cost 50 php since it is late at night. We took a deep sleep afterwards and looking forward for our adventure in El Nido.

Ugong Rock Rocks!

adventure starts here...

Apart from the Underground River tour, the guest can pick 1 side trip after UGR tour. There are 3 choices, first is the Ugong Rock Adventure, second is sabang x zip line, and the third option is Mangrove River Tour. Sabang X Zip line is an 800 meters zip line that cost 550 php per pax. The Mangrove River Tour cost 100+ php, I am not sure of the price but it is much cheaper that the other two activities. In this side trip one can tour the mangroves found in Sabang Palawan.

caving officially starts at this bridge

Since our group composes of 10 people, we have to decide which side trip the group wants to visit. Majority of us chooses Ugong Rock Adventure and off we go!

entrance of the cave...

Ugong Rock was a project owned by ABS-CBN foundation to help locals earn a living through tourism. Upon the entrance you can see various pictures of ABS-CBN executives doing zip line just like Gina Lopez of ABS-CBN Foundation Inc and many more.

In every group there will be a tour guide to help you roam inside the cave. According to the tour guide this place is originally surrounded with water but due to plate tectonics it transformed into another form. The different rock formation is the proof that water surrounds this place thousand years ago.

The tour guide also mentioned that Ugong rock is a actually part of Underground River. Inside the cave are different kinds of rock formation just like a camel form in the picture.

Natives used this to climb up.

swing...

Long time ago natives living in this place used this as a hide out from the enemies. Local people used branches of the tree to either help them climb or used it as a swing.

walking through narrow way

Going inside the cave is not scary since there are a lot of staff inside. Just like the one here in the picture below. She is trying to explain about how stalactites were formed.

stalactite

So that you will not be confused just remember the letter "c" in Stalactites means ceiling and "g" in stalagmites which means ground. Therefore, Stalactites hang from the ceiling, whereas Stalagmites rise from the ground. ^__^

spelunking

Caving also occasionally known as "spelunking" in the United States and Canada and "potholing" in the United Kingdom and Ireland is the recreational pastime of exploring wild cave systems.(wikipedia)

ayos!

going up the cave

Caving cost 200 php per pax while zip line cost 250 php per pax. I tell you, you should try it both.

At the end of the caving awaits this beautiful view.

There are two options in going down it's either you will do the backward thing, like doing the caving or spelunking all over again or the faster way is by zipping down through cables.

zip.zip.zip...

many people will assist you before and after

Here in Ugong Rock found the fastest zip line in the Philippines. It lets riders go down up to 16 meters per second for a total of 22 seconds. You can express your mind after having a zip line in their freedom wall.

After a long day of adventure, we asked the tour guide to drop us in island souvenir shop. A few steps from here is where tiangge (market) is located it is where tourist can buy cheap souvenir for their love one back home.

i Palawan

It took us more than an hour to buy pasalubong and because of our activities for that day it all made us all tired and hungry. Of course won't let our vacation over without grabbing the chance to try their famous restaurant in town. Kinabuch Grill and bar is famous for their affordable yet delicious cuisine. We opted to go to Kalui Restaurant but since it needed some reservation that's why we ended up eating at Kinabuch instead.

two thumbs up!

The verdict? The ambiance is cool and the place is very spacious. Even though the place is crowded that night still the waiter and waitresses were able to serve us properly. Plus the food is great for such an affordable price. I should say it's a must when you visit Puerto Princesa.
